Outokumpu VDM, a leading manufacturer of corrosion and heat resistant high-performance materials, is investing in its Werdohl location: Today, the company opened its new training center – the “VDM Karriereschmiede” (“Career Forge”) – in the presence of Werdohl’s Mayor Siegfried Griebsch and representatives of the South-Westphalian Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
In the past few months, the existing training workshop has been enlarged by about 300 square meters, and the machinery and equipment have been modernized and upgraded. In addition, a number of new, fully equipped PC and training rooms have been installed in an extension to the existing building.
"Well-trained employees are the basis for our company's success. In times where the shortage of skilled personnel is being universally discussed, our Karriereschmiede offers our employees a modern infrastructure that covers all aspects of basic and advanced training. This investment underlines our position as one of the leading registered training employers in the region,"
says Dr Jürgen Olbrich, Chairman of the Management Board of Outokumpu VDM.
Many future training courses will no longer be exclusively available for Outokumpu VDM employees. "We are planning to have our Karriereschmiede certificated in compliance with the Accreditation and Approval Regulation for Employment Promotion – AZAV for short – and with ISO standard 29990. With these two certificates, Outokumpu VDM can also operate as an external training service provider. So the region will also benefit from the ‘VDM Karriereschmiede’," says Stephanie Effern, director of training at Outokumpu VDM.
Each year, some 30 school-leavers start an apprenticeship at Outokumpu VDM. "The spectrum of trades that we cover stretches from industrial clerk and chemical laboratory assistant to materials tester and industrial mechanic. We are convinced that, in the long term, our Karriereschmiede will encourage young people to become apprentices or trainees at Outokumpu VDM as well as offering a broad range of training programs to interested people outside our company," states Effern.
