Contract awarded to modernize four-high hot rolling mill
ThyssenKrupp VDM is making major investments to modernize its Siegen site. The company, which produces high-performance materials, has now awarded a contract to upgrade the four-high mill, originally built in 1954. “This will update one of the Siegen plant’s core units to the latest technological standards and secure the future of the site,” says Hanno Gerich, plant manager at the ThyssenKrupp VDM facilities Altena and Siegen. Following the 30 million euro investment in Siegen (app. 70 employees), the new hot rolling mill is scheduled to start operation in mid 2013.
The four-high mill produces heavy nickel and titanium alloy plates which are used to manufacture pipelines for the oil and gas industry and tanks and pipes for chemical plants as well as e. g. in seawater desalination plants, power stations, turbines and fuel cells. Plate is an important product area for ThyssenKrupp VDM, especially as it can offer sizes unavailable elsewhere on the worldwide market. The new mill has an all over rolling pressure of 6,000 tons, so that the thickness range is extended to higher dimensions. Additionally, it will also be possible to process larger slabs with higher weights. Further improvements relate to the measurement technology and automation. “Replacing the outdated mill with a state-of-the-art unit will open up new opportunities that will give us an additional competitive edge,” says Gerich.
Werdohl-based ThyssenKrupp VDM is a company of Inoxum and manufactures high-performance materials, including nickel alloys, special stainless steels and zirconium and titanium mill products. ThyssenKrupp VDM has been supplying sheet, plate, rods, ingots, strip and wire for more than 80 years. Its main customers are in the engineering, energy production, oil and gas, electrical, electronics, automotive and aerospace sectors. ThyssenKrupp VDM (roughly 1,850 employees) has German production sites in Werdohl, Altena, Unna, Siegen and Essen as well as two plants in the USA. In addition, the company has a global sales and distribution network.
